On dVerse Poets, it’s Abhra’s birthday and he asks, what gift we would like to give him. Or the world. As I was reading his post, quite by happy chance, I heard the tui call …
The gift – tanka
into the cup of
the evening the tui
drops its golden song
my beggar heart rejoices
the moon rises in delight
~~~
And what beautiful golden tanka this is Jolly ~
Thanks Grace.
Oh I had not heard of the tui before.. but i love such an evening song.. and I guess you are moving into spring now.
Yes, very much spring here. Flowers everywhere and tuis on all the flowering kowhai trees ….
I’ve never heard of a tui. I’ll have to look that up on my bird app. A lovely gift of a tanka.
Thanks Gayle. The tui has a large vocabulary. some of the sounds it makes are outside the range of human hearing. But it’s very interesting listening to it call, it’s almost like listening to a conversation 🙂
I looked it up and listened to a short audio. A striking bird…will have to investigate it further. I have a video on my blog of a lyre bird who can mimic the sounds of car alarms, chain saws and all kinds of other sounds…just amazing! I’m fascinated. 🙂
It is native to NZ and one of our icons 🙂
It’s a striking bird with that beautiful iridescence…
Lovely tanka. 🙂
Thanks Celestine. Any progress with the poems?
Yes. But I’m waiting for the new deadline. 🙂
Oct 10th but can be moved to Oct 15th latest.
Thanks, dear. 🙂
I could almost hear the notes..although I’ve never heard of the tui before. Beautiful .
