The day begins

breaking through the shell
of night, dawn peeps, tremulous
at prisoner me

trying to break free
from a self-built prison
yet another day

as sleep fades like mist
and I wake yet again
into illusion

pain presses pulsates
through muscle sinew and bone
mind flickers through night

dawn comes sniveling
bruised red and torn yellow
like blooms after rain

light prises open
the carapace of shadows
sentience at last
